Crossroads: Walking the Way of the Cross

This Holy Week we will be teaching from the Gospel of Luke on how to walk in the way of Jesus.

Each evening, we will consider times when the people who met Jesus found their lives at a crossroads. We will look at how they were faced with a decision about the route their lives would take for their whole future.

Crossroads are something we all face in our lives. It may be a birth, a wedding, or a death that brings us to that point of having to decide what direction the future will take for us.

It could be a graduation, a change in employment or a divorce that causes us to stop, take stock and decide where our lives are going. A birthday, an anniversary or an illness can bring us to a time of reflection, followed by a desire to take a new path in life.

The greatest crossroads all of us should come to is the one that leads us on the route to Calvary. The Cross of Jesus presents the most life changing crossroads in history.

I was recently asked to share my faith story or my journey with Christ, at the Hilden Centre on the Low Road. It caused me to think again of the impact that the Cross of Christ has had on my life.

It changed my outlook and priorities, it meant that I chose another believer to spend the rest of my life with; it led me into Christian Ministry and it changes how I brought up my family.

It meant that my greatest desire for my children is that they may know Jesus and his Cross as the means of their salvation. The Cross changes lives!

I love the little poster I saw recently with a cross. It said on the cross, "Jesus Saves" and underneath was a note, "even in a recession". Whatever crossroads we come to, Jesus offers us salvation.

The Cross commemorates the most magnificent act of love ever undertaken and is the hope of Christians across the world. But the Cross is more than a religious picture; it is also a renewing path.

As the apostle Peter once declared: "To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his steps." What does it mean to walk the way of Jesus in our time?

What difference might it make to our families, workplaces, communities, our souls, if we could really follow that path? Join us this Holy Week in the Cathedral at 7.30pm as we find the ancient "Cross Roads" and rediscover the footpaths that lead to life. Whatever crossroads you may be at, Christ goes before you and offers you the best way, the way that leads to life in all its fullness.

May the Saviour's love bless your lives this Easter!
