  • Jesus identifies with the lost. Jesus goes to the people, to the lost.

  • Jesus is motivated by compassion. He is light in the darkness.

  • Jesus is concerned for the whole person. Words and deeds toward the lost. The words of Jesus are not hollow but full and complete because of his deeds.

Bible Study Material

Intro:

Take a few minutes quietly to think of three adjectives which you feel are readily applicable to yourself. Write them down. Now take a moment to consider the other group members who are with you tonight. From what you know write down one adjective that you will later share with the group. When everyone is ready briefly share, in turn, your three words for yourself. Then let the group share their words with you. Let each member of the group have there turn then take a couple of minute of silent prayer to thank God for being your Father and adopting you as his child.

Reading : Mark 1:9—45.

Q1. What do you think Jesus’ baptism meant at the time that it happened and what did it ultimately mean? (Mk.1:9 — 11) See also Matt 3: 13-17.

Q2. How did the events of his baptism help him cope with the next 40days? Is God’s affirmation important to us, do we seek it?

Q3. What have we to learn about how Jesus relates to the “sinners” of his day? What examples of “good practice” would recall from the gospels? Why do you think it was “good practice”?

Q4. Are you ever concerned that “sinners” will influence you more than you will influence them? What can you do to address this concern effectively?

Compassion: sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. Thoughtfulness; consideration; respect; tact; courtesy; concern; regard and solicitude. Given the definition and list of related words explore Jesus encounter with the man suffering from leprosy. (Mk.:40 — 45) Was his compassion conditional or judgmental in any way? Is compassion a trait the church is known for? If not, why not? What can be done to help us be more compassionate?

Q5. In what physical and spiritual ways can we, like Jesus, minister to the whole person? For consideration; Matt. 25: 34 40. Mark 1:29 —34.

Q6. Can we be too concerned with dotting “i”s and crossing “t”s to see the whole person as Jesus did, to begin to undo the bondage Satan has placed upon people?

Q7. Have we anything to learn from Mark 1: 35—37? Who did Jesus turn to? Who do we turn to first as we live and minister?

Prayer:

Take some time to conclude your time prayerfully.
