Revival… a new production of an old play!

Initially I think I was trying to be clever to come up with a word beginning with ‘re’ to act as a clarion call for the year ahead. We had ‘React’ two years ago and ‘Restore’ last year.

Both had an impact and gave a sense of direction and purpose for the year ahead.

The second followed on from the first and I believe in the last two years we in the Cathedral have witnessed a growing desire to be about the Father’s business.

It is the oldest story ever told. The unmerited love of God for those made in his own image but who alas, all to readily, forget or reject the very one who created them.

At the Cathedral we are seeking to re-tell this love story with imagination and energy. We tell it by what we say, by what we do and by the level of grace that seasons our words and actions.

We are seeking to be relevant to every generation and to be in a position to present the ‘old play’ in a way that confronts each generation, causing them to wonder about eternity and their place in it.

PURPOSE

‘React’ pulled us together – so many people were needed and almost no one refused to help and play their part.

‘Restore’ has made dilapidated, shabby and cold places attractive and warm again.

In the process we have been conscious of a unity of purpose and God’s blessing. ‘Revival’ is next. At first in the sense that we seek to present the love of God in new ways, not adding to or subtracting from the message but enabling it to grab the attention of those listening.

With revival of this kind then revival of a different kind is possible. An awakening or reawakening of passion for God, a restoring of life and hope to those who were lost and in darkness.

We must pray. We must pray for revival, that the old play will be inspirationally made new. We must pray for revival, that people will turn to the Father who made them and welcomes them to take their place in the eternal story.
