Big Story World
This is the fourth annual Big Church Service at Lisburn Cathedral running from Wednesday 12th April to Saturday 15th April. Our theme this time is “Big Story World” which will be open from 12.00pm until 4.00pm each day.
The Dean of Connor, Sam Wright with around 150 of his parishioners from Lisburn Cathedral will be putting on their high visibility vests and demonstrating their care for the people of Lisburn through community events and practical service across four days. Lisburn City Centre will host a football cage, a team of people cleaning up the streets, giveaways and a climbing wall. Extending out to Hillhall Estate, a marquee will be erected to host a pamper club, a kids club and a team of volunteers to clean up local gardens. Our Maundy Thursday Service at 7.00pm is also going to be held in the marquee in Hillhall.
As part of Big Church Serve, the Cathedral building will become a “Big Story World”.
Gareth Campbell (Cathedral Youth Worker) describes it in this way: “Big Story World’ involves transforming our Cathedral into an interactive, fun exhibition bringing all your favourite stories and fairy tales to life. This is an event for Families - Parents and children of all ages can visit ‘Big Story World’ free of charge and enjoy the crafts, games, and activities that tell Bible Stories from Creation through to Revelation using famous books and tales we’ve all grown up knowing so well.
“Meet Jack and the Beanstalk at the main door to the Cathedral, which takes us into ‘Big Story World’ where we begin to explore how God created the whole world and us too! Then come to the tree of the forbidden fruit. In the story of Snow White she ate an apple that had a consequence, in our story there was an apple with a consequence too! We can then walk down the yellow brick road. The characters in the Wizard of Oz wanted a heart, courage and a brain. Find out what God’s people needed as they faced giants, lions and much more! Now to Narnia - a winter wonderland, helping us to connect with the amazing sacrifice on the cross. Through Toy Story and the Hungry Caterpillar we will understand more about the friendship and life we can share with Jesus. Story time every half hour will share more adventures from God’s story! There will be areas full of activity and a free café and quiet area for anyone wanting to escape the madness of our busy city.”
On Saturday afternoon, the Cathedral will welcome some very special guests from our favourite stories. Come along and meet Snow White, Buzz Lightyear and the characters from Oz plus many more and why not dress up as your own favourite character to join in the fun.
To finish off the event, Lisburn Cathedral will host its famous Ice Cream Sundae Family Service to share the story of the Risen Jesus on 16th April at 11am. The Speaker at this Ice Cream Sundea Service will be Bishop Alan Abernethy, (Bishop of Connor), Over the past four years of Big Church Serve many people from across the Lisburn Community have joined with regular church members for this Easter Celebration Service. You will be most welcome to worship at the Easter Ice Cream Sundae and to stay around after the service to get some great ice-cream served from the ‘Proud’ Ice Cream Tricycle.
Our aim in ‘Big Church Serve’ is to bring out the “God colours” in Lisburn and Hillhall by sharing the greatest story ever, the message of Easter, of Jesus’ sacrifice for our sin and his offer of new life for all who trust in him as saviour.
